Day 1- Trip to Nicosia
We began our day early for our field trip to Nicosia. After breakfast, we boarded the van and started our journey, which was about a 2 hour ride. Our first destination was the Archbishop's Palace, where we visited the personal quarters of Archbishop Makarios III and saw his room with its furniture and the gifts he received from world leaders. We continued our tour of the city, visiting a large cathedral, the Green Line, and more before returning to the hotel for a brief rest. During our time in Nicosia, we stayed at the Cleopatra Hotel. After a quick 20-minute break, we ventured out to explore the city’s shops. I noticed that it was much more diverse in Nicosia compared to Paphos. There was a large African, Turkish and South Asian presence. On our way into the city, we saw a large Turkish flag on a mountain, which Dr. C explained was a symbol of power and intimidation. The day was packed with activities, and we ended it with dinner. I ordered risotto and courgettes, followed by a dessert containing some sort of yogurt and fruit marmalade. My roommates and I then bought Boba tea and explored a bit more of the city before heading back to the hotel to sleep.
