Studying Abroad in Cyprus

Welcome to my study abroad journey in Cyprus! I'm thrilled to share my experiences, adventures, and knowledge I've gained during my time abroad in May 2024.

About

Hello! My name is Hifsah Ayub

This is a website to showcase my experiences during my study abroad in Cyprus. The program I took part in was “Sustainability in Cyprus: Health & Well-being, the Environment and Society.” I took the course GEO 3755 (Geography of the European Union and the Challenges of Sustainability). Alongside my course, there was another class, NURSING 3798 (The Global Sustainable Development Goals: A Focus on Health and Well-Being), attended by other students in the program. Our classes came together for field trips, offering a holistic view of sustainability and global health in conjunction.

The geography course focused on the broad range of sustainability challenges that face the European Union, using the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a unifying theme.   Cyprus and its priority Sustainable Development Goals are a case example.  Central to the course was the emphasis on the three pillars of sustainability, environmental, social, and economic, and how they impact efforts toward European integration.

There is much to be learned from studying abroad, and I would highly recommend visiting Cyprus as it is rich in culture and history. I would like to extend my gratitude to my professor, Dr. Stavros Constantinou, who is so full of knowledge and provided my peers and I with incredible insight on the country as a native Cypriot.

Cyprus Context

Location:

Cyprus is an island country located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea 44 miles south of Turkey and 500 miles east of the mainland of Greece.

Historical Context:

Turkish Occupation
The island has a complex history involving various rulers, but the most recent significant conflict began in 1974 when Turkey invaded Cyprus following a coup d'état by the Greek military junta in power in Greece at the time and Cypriot nationalists who aimed to annex the island to Greece. The Turkish invasion led to the occupation of the northern part of Cyprus, resulting in the division of the island into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (recognized only by Turkey) and the Republic of Cyprus, which controls the southern two-thirds of the island and is internationally recognized. The Green Line, a UN buffer zone, separates the two areas. Efforts to reunify the island have been ongoing but the problem remains unresolved.

British Rule
Cyprus became a part of the British Empire in 1878 and was formally annexed by Britain in 1914 on the outbreak of war with Turkey. The island remained under British rule until 1960, when it gained independence and became the Republic of Cyprus.

Religious Demographics:

Cyprus is predominantly Christian, with Greek Orthodox being the largest religious group. There is also a Muslim minority, primarily Turkish Cypriots.
